Cat and the Canary, The (1939), directed by Elliott Nugent.
A remake of The Cat and the Canary (1927), although I've read it copies the lost The Cat Creeps (1930) more directly.
More of a comic version and we lose most of German Impressionist look, although the sets are quite nice. Master cinematographer Charles B. Lang gives lovely shadowed lighting.
We've moved from New England to the bayou.
Familiar faces:
Lovely Paulette Goddard as the heiress. I certainly want to protect her.
Bob Hope as the funnyman. He has to have a lot of one-liners. I like him in the Road series but otherwise he is sometimes hard to take.
George Zucco as the family lawyer.
Gale Sondergaard as the menacing housekeeper.
Costumes by Edith Head.
Available on Blu-ray from Kino with a commentary track.
