Visiting back east to stay with Catherine's parents, Frank gets pulled into the case of the "Big Woodsman", an active serial killer operating along the Appalachian Trail. But this guy is a tool of the Polaroid Man who has been stalking the Blacks since the first episode.
The arc brings us to a season-ending cliffhanger. Catherine has been taken and Frank's nightmare has come true.
Notes:
We spend a lot of time with the "Big Woodsman" and it is a nasty experience. His mother is no prize either.
The serial killer is played by familiar face Mike Starr, often an unpleasant bruiser. I remember him best for Miller's Crossing (1990) and Ed Wood (1994).
Catherine's sister is a pill, always digging at the Black family.
For the first time, we see Frank and Catherine in bed after sex (in her parent's house!):

Catherine: Um, the Air and Space Museum, and then to the park where Dawn unburdened herself about our marriage.
Frank: Our marriage?
Catherine: I, I don't know what she's doing when she does that - trying to fix my life, when it doesn't need fixing.
Frank: She's got problems of her own.
Catherine: Yes. Finally told her how to work them out.
Frank: How?
Catherine: Just like we just did.
