How I Won the War (1967)

How I Won the War (1967), produced and directed by Richard Lester.

Another of Lester's madcap absurd comedies, this time lampooning army life and demonstrating the pointlessness of war. Mostly slapstick skits, with the occasional inserts showing the real horror behind the humor, but it is not really a satire with any sort of bite.

Honestly, 1h50m is way long for this.

He brings back his talented ensemble, with the addition of John Lennon as one of the foot soldiers. They say this is where he got the granny glasses that became a sort of trademark.

Photographed by David Watkin.

Available on Blu-ray from Kino. No subtitles and they are sorely missed. I've been watching British film all my longish life but quips and snappy patter can still fly by me.
