Last Detail, The (1973)

The Last Detail (1973), directed by Hal Ashby.

Two Navy policeman, escorting another sailor to prison, take some detours and decide to show the kid a good time. It's his last chance for a while.

A combination road trip, buddy film and coming of age story, this has that great 1970s look of real locations and undressed sets.

Our characters are just average guys: they brawl a bit but are not as tough as they think they are. Their outlawry is pretty mild and Jack Nicholson's best pickup lines for the ladies are feeble.

Fine cast. Fresh faces: Randy Quaid, Carol Kane (nudity!), Michael Moriarty, Nancy Allen, Gilda Radner.

Screenplay by Robert Towne. The wikipedia article has details on the troubled production.
